Photo taken in Korea, 2017
Over the weekend, I was privileged to be in (virtual) community with other Korean-American writers, led by writers Joseph Han and Gene Kwak. I was thrilled to be included in the first of hopefully many more events. Never would I have dreamed of being part of something like that, where other Koreans would invite me in and say, “Yes, you belong here.”
I recently finished a flash CNF about how I would eat my kids if I were a spider. Totally normal. Since I had been pondering it for a while, it was a quick one to do—I wrote it out, transcribed it into Google Docs, workshopped it with my fantastic writing group and did a quick rework. I felt pretty good about the piece, which I titled “Circle the Drain,” and sent it out to a couple lit mags. I really tried to lean into the grotesque and macabre. We’ll see if it pays off. Credit to Soccer Mommy’s song tribute to the 90s for the title idea.
Until next time.
